Introducing I-Junction’s free Google Analytics Configuration Tool

I love data.
I’m particularly fascinated by what you can learn in your website’s analytics to help improve both your marketing and your user’s experience. For both Raven Tools and my personal websites, I’ve always turned to Google Analytics.
What I don’t love is how difficult it is to figure out how to customize Google Analytics to get the kind of data I care about. Unless you’re a seasoned analytics pro or a savvy developer, you’ve probably run into the same problem over and over again: you know what data you need in Google Analytics, but you don’t know how to get it.
Enter the new Google Analytics Configuration Tool. Better known as GA Config.
Google Analytics Configuration Tool

One consistent resource, once and for all

I dreamed up GA Config because I found there were two topics I constantly needed help with:
  1. Setting up my Google Analytics account
  2. Setting up goals and KPIs
As I mined through the bottomless Google Analytics knowledge base and countless posts from Google Analytics experts, I noticed a trend: advice was inconsistent and, in many cases, outdated. So with the help of LunaMetrics, a Google Analytics Certified Partner, I put together tutorials and tools to simplify the setup process once and for all.
Here’s a sample of what you can configure with GA Config:
Currently GA Config offers support for 17 configurations, most of which exist in the Events section.

Configuring your Google Analytics

To use GA Config, you’ll need three basic pieces of information ready before you start:
  1. Your Google Analytics account number
  2. The URL of the website you’re setting up tracking for
  3. Which Google Analytics syntax you’re using: Asynchronous or Traditional ga.js
GA Config will do all of the heavy lifting for you. As you progress through any individual section and add information or make selections, additional options will appear. The finished product: the exact Google Analytics code you need to add to your website. Be sure to follow the directions carefully and place the code in the right places.
One Domain with Subdomains Example

Privacy

Naturally, you might wonder how Raven can protect your privacy with a tool like this. That’s easy: we don’t store any data with this tool. There are no accounts you create or anything that would allow us to see your sensitive information.
It’s also important to note that this tool is an independent Google Analytics configuration tool and not associated with Google in any way.

There’s more in store

This is just the start of what I hope to become a very powerful, versatile and, most importantly, free analytics tool. We’re already working on some cool ideas that deal with regular expressions, setting up filters and other points of analytics confusion.
So give Raven’s free Google Analytics Configuration Tool a try now. I know Dave Minchala is already a fan of the new tool, thanks to a sneak peek. He’s such a fan, we had to redact his… enthusiasm… a little bit.

What the merging of Google+ and Google Search means to SEO

What I’ll call the “Great Google Convergence” continued yesterday as Google announced that they would be merging their Google+ (G+) data into personalized search results (aka Search, Plus Your World).
On the surface, this appears to be a desperate play by Google to make sure its social networking experiment, G+, gains more traction.
However, I don’t think Google is desperate at all—and this isn’t just about their social network. Google knows exactly what they’re doing with G+: I think they’re using it to unify their products, get people dependent on the Google Bar without even realizing it and, of course, change the way people find information in Search. And most importantly, all of this gives Google data.
(Update 1January 24th, 2012: Google CEO, Larry Page, was quoted saying: “This is the path we’re headed down – a single unified, beautiful product across everything.”)
(Update 2January 25th, 2012: Google consolidated 60 difference privacy policies into one unified privacy policy. You cannot opt-out of it unless you stop using all Google products.)

What G+ solves for Google Products

Let’s start with Google’s products. Chrome OS was an experiment to see if users could survive—thrive even—in a browser-only environment. The experiment required that all of the tools you would need would be browser accessible. Google has been very busy creating and promoting those tools. If you have any doubt about that, take a quick glance at today’s list of Google products (they have been culling the list, but what’s left is still impressive):
google-products
The only problem has been the lack of visual unification of Google products, and the stealing of page views, advertising revenue and time from rivals like Facebook. That’s where the Google Bar and G+ come in.
Now, when you’re logged in to Google, you’re using the Google Bar by default any time that you’re using a Google product. For example, here’s what it looks like when I’m in Google Docs:
Google-Bar
At first, the Google Bar seemed like a simple UI change. But when G+ was released, not only could your main social network be easy to access via the Google Bar, you could conduct all of your business without leaving the Google ecosystem.
If you have a Google account, which millions of people do, then it’s only a matter of time until people start interacting and using G+. The Google Bar makes it too easy not to.
That gives Google a tremendous advantage for business, entertainment and social life online—and some are already saying it’s an unfair one.

What G+ solves for Google Search

G+ also solves Google’s very big problem of trust and authority for content that’s served in their SERPs. Before Google Profiles and their push for connecting authors with the content they’ve written, they had to rely solely on “low confidence” data to determine trust and authority and hope for the best.
Google is attempting to solve that problem with G+ by putting emphasis on Google Profile entities and how those profiles interact socially within the G+ framework. G+ provides Google the ability to not only better measure individual trust and authority, but also the ability to measure trust and authority for many people across large fragmented networks.
They can then use this “high confidence” data to determine the best content to present in their SERPs. For example, if trusted and authoritative G+ users +1 an article that’s connected to a Google profile, the author’s profile should increase in trust and authority, and the content should perform better in the SERPs.
These scenarios all work systemically, where every G+ action automatically affects every related profile and +1′d content.
So what does this all mean for SEO?
It means a lot is changing, but a lot is also staying the same.

How the merging of G+ data into SERPs will impact SEO

SEOs are an opportunistic bunch, so the first thing I expect to see are attempts to exploit it. For example, some will come to the conclusion that they’ll be able to win the SERPs battle by building immense circles around multiple profiles. A lot of time will be wasted doing this. The problem is that Google has already thought of this.
With G+, the new PageRank is something I like to call Google Profile Authority or GPA. Achieving a high GPA won’t come from building giant networks (circles) full of weak profiles. Also, building an enormous network of friends will most likely be full of people (some fake) that have irrelevant interests and they won’t come close to the 99.9% of other people outside your network that will be searching.
The best approach to GPA is to consider what the G+ changes will actually do.
  1. In theory, it will provide more relevant search results that have been prescreened by trusted connections.
  2. Your participation and GPA in G+ will influence some of the search results for other people.
  3. Your participation will not affect the search results for the majority of people doing searches outside your network, with your GPA being the possible exception, assuming it has some impact on the algorithm.
Keeping those things in mind, here are my suggestions for approaching SEO in a G+ world.
  1. It will be more important than ever to be positively connected to people and influencers within the industries you represent.
  2. Treat your Google profile like your own site. Assume that your actions always influence your GPA.
  3. Treat +1s like links. Meaning, don’t +1 things that are spammy, because it may adversely affect your GPA.
  4. When other sites publish your guest posts, make sure they not only link to your site, but also link to your G+ profile using rel=”author”.
  5. Try to have your own content +1′d and shared by as many people as possible.
  6. Strive to get links on a profile with an assumed high GPA.
Bottom line, if you want to be as visible as possible on Google, you will have to immerse yourself into their social ecosystem. What hasn’t changed is creating good content and fostering meaningful online relationships.

Broken link building with Raven’s Link Manager and local directories

Frustrated with social media link building and directory submissions? It’s time to get dirty by digging in and prospecting local directories to find broken link building gold.

There are a ton of great broken link building resources out there. I obviously didn’t invent it, but I have my own unique twist on this established technique (known as BLB from now on). With the help of Raven’s Link Manager tool, this process is incredibly simple.

Broken link building 101

The basis of BLB is to find websites that have broken links either internally or externally and then communicate with the webmaster and alert them of the broken link. This is a great way to open the lines of communication with the webmaster without using a run of the mill “Hi, I have this great website that I think you should link to!” form submission. Your good deed provides value to the webmaster and creates a window to eventually pitch them on adding a link on their site to yours. Easy enough, right?

Step 1: Prospect for sites using local directories

Finding prospects is always the most difficult part in this plan. My method of finding local BLB prospects is fairly straightforward. I like to start with local directories. My favorites are BBB.org and YellowPages.com.
Next I identify whom I want to get links from. If I’m working on a site for a general contractor, I would want links back from skilled specialists such as electricians, plumbers, roofers, carpenters, etc. Those are the sites I’m going to go after first.
Then I mine the site for the area of specialization I’m looking for. Since I’m in Nashville, TN I’m going to look up electricians in Nashville. A search on BBB.org reveals 101 electricians listed in the Nashville area! That’s great, since many of them will have probably have websites.
Nashville-Electricians
101 websites is a lot to visit and open individually. Luckily, there are a couple of great tools to help you with this. The first one is a Firefox/Chrome Extension called Multi Links. There is also a tool from Citation Labs called the Outbound Link Scraper.
I’m going to use the Multi Links to copy all the URLs from our electricians page and then paste them into a spreadsheet. You’ll notice you get a lot of BBB.org links included – if you sort your URLs A-Z you can select the BBB.org ones and remove them quickly.
Once I delete the BBB.org links I go from 51 URLs to 12 URLs. The reason I only have 12 links from this page is because not all of businesses listed have a website. (You can also reach out to clients that have a BBB listing but don’t have a website as potential clients for your business!)
Now go back to BBB.org and repeat the process until you’ve gone through all the electricians. I ended up with 54 URLs out of the potential 101 electricians listed (sounds like 47 new clients to go after). That was pretty quick and painless, right? I didn’t have to copy and paste 54 URLs one by one, and that always makes me happy! On to the next step.

Step 2: Crawl prospect sites for 404s

This is one of my favorite parts of broken link building. I love crawling other people’s sites with Screaming Frog. Some people prefer Xenu; use whatever you want. I use the free version of Screaming Frog. Even though it limits you to 500 results, most local small business sites don’t have more than 500 pages so it’s not a big deal.
This part of BLB can be repetitive and boring to some. I haven’t been able to find a way to scan multiple sites at once for 404s, so you’re going to have to do this one by one. Within the first six searches I’ve already found an internal 404 error.
Screaming-Frog-404 copy
So I copy the From URL and the To URL to my spreadsheet so that I know to contact this person and bring the broken link to their attention.
And we still have 48 URLs to search through. Eventually, I found 6 broken links out of 54 URLs. Not too shabby! Two of the sites had multiple broken links on them. The webmaster will probably be happy to hear from me and hopefully that will entice them to link back to my site. If not, I only spent 30 minutes crawling all 54 sites. Consider it an act of charity.

Step 3: Manage potential links with Link Manager

Finally it’s time to put all those links into a manageable database. For this, the Raven Link Manager (Links > Link Manager) tool is freaking sweet, no two ways around it. I love using this thing to manage my links because I can really customize it to how I build links.
Use the Link Import Form to import a CSV file or enter prospects individually just by clicking ‘Add Link’. I suggest creating a new ‘Status’ named something like ‘Broken Link Building – Requested’. The idea is to keep these links separate from other links that I’m building. Raven allows you to do this on the fly, which is pretty awesome.
I also create a new ‘Link Type’, which I’ve appropriately named ‘Broken Link Building’. I want to make sure and keep these links separate from the other things I’m working on in my Raven account.
Now I add the Anchor Text I want the link to have, ‘Scism Marketing’, and I want it to link to my root domain http://www.scismmarketing.com. For tags, I put in something like “BLB” and I make the Link Description “BLB campaign – Nashville BBB.org – Electricians” to let me know where this link came from.
Raven-Tools-Link-Manager
Another awesome tool is ‘Assign Task to this Link’. I create a task to ‘email the main contact’ and alert them to their broken links on their site. Then just click ‘Add Task’ to store it.

Step 4: Find contacts and email your prospects

The last really cool feature of the Link Manager is one that you don’t really expect until you enter these links in by hand. I create a new ‘Website Type’ and call it ‘BLB’ (I’ve got a theme going!). Then I enter the URL of the broken site and the tab called ‘Website Contacts’ pops up.
website-contacts
This fantastic piece of JavaScript saves the day by actually going and looking for contact information on the website for you! Click ‘Find Contacts’ and be amazed. Once it’s done running, a new link shows up that says ‘View Contacts’. This gives you an email address you can add to the contact section. HOLY FRENCH TOAST – THANK YOU RAVEN! That was so easy!
As a final measure, under the ‘Comments’ tab I always include what I found during my Screaming Frog crawl. Then click ‘Add Comment’ and it saves your Link Record. You can then ‘Enable Monitoring for this Link Record’ and check to see if the link still exists. All within this one page! Simply incredible.

10 tools for exceptional SEO customer service

Here’s my top 10 list – if I’m missing anything, hit me up in the comments below.

1. Rapportive

Rapportive
I’ve seen Rapportive all over the place lately, and for a good reason. In their own words, Rapportive “shows you everything about your contacts right inside your inbox.” This one is Gmail only – sorry Outlook users!
As I write, I’m looking at an email from a coworker in my inbox, where I see his Twitter, LinkedIn, and Plancast profiles, followed by his latest tweets, recent emails, and even a list of Google Docs we have collaborated on recently.
From a customer service standpoint, this app gives you a closer look into what’s currently happening in your contact’s life and how they interact online. You can also save notes to remind yourself of things like contacts’ kids names, hometown, etc. Rapportive just got bought by LinkedIn, but company says it will continue to support Rapportive.

2. Gist

gist
Gist is fascinating – one look at my “People” and “Companies” dashboards and I was hooked – thanks to instant visibility into frequency of contact with people in your network, and how recently you have been in touch.
It’s basically a communications analytics dashboard – a great tool to make sure you’re reaching out to clients promptly and frequently, and that you are using every possible channel available.
Here is a screenshot of my “Companies” dashboard:

3. Boomerang

boomerang-gmail
I use Boomerang every single day. I remember signing up for Boomerang when it was first launched in 2010, but I hadn’t really put it to use until the new year, when I needed it to facilitate a personal New Year’s resolution to be better at following up with clients and coworkers.
Boomerang schedules emails to be sent later, and you can also set emails to be sent on a recurring calendar. Personally, I love the setting that sends an email back to you if you haven’t received a response within a specified period of time.
boomerang-setting
Now thanks to Boomerang, if I haven’t heard back from a client or coworker within the expected amount of time, the email returns to my inbox so that I can follow up and remind that person of the task at hand.

4. Followup.cc

FollowUp-cc
Followup lets you include a dynamic email in the CC or BCC fields, and then the service will send the email back to you on the date specified.
followup-cc-snooze
If you send an email and BCC friday@followup.cc, that email will bounce back to your inbox the following Friday. Send to 2d@followup.cc, and an email will bounce back two days after sending – 5h@followup.cc will send it back in five hours.
These handy reminders presets are also present in every email, to push it back an hour, a day, a month, etc.
I’ve been using Followup.cc in step with Boomerang since the new year, and I still can’t decide which I prefer.

5. Taskforce

Taskforce
Taskforce is a brilliant productivity app for Gmail and Google Apps email, allowing you to convert emails to tasks, invite collaborators, and set recurring tasks. It even syncs with your Google Tasks and Calendar.

6. ActiveInbox

Active-Inbox
ActiveInbox is another Gmail app run by Chrome and Firefox extensions (download it on their website) for managing tasks from your inbox.
A few notable functions include the ability to create “actions” (tasks) from emails, manage them in a sidebar widget, save private notes in conversations, and move around your inbox faster with some fancy shortcuts.

7. IFTTT.com

ifttt
IFTTT is awesome. Short for “If this, then that,” IFTTT taps into Gmail, Dropbox, Google Calendar, Facebook, Twitter, and probably just about every online service you’re connected to, and allows you to create rule-based tasks.
The most popular IFTTT “recipe” takes every photo you’re tagged in on Facebook, and copies that photo to Dropbox.
Another watches Amazon’s 100 free Kindle eBook’s list, and sends you an email every time that list changes.
Here are a couple applications for customer service with SEO clients, or for staying on task with superiors:
  • Replicate Gist’s ‘frequency of contact’ dashboard analytics
First, set up a filter in Gmail, labeling all emails to and from clients as “Client” (of if you’re in-house, then label them by your supervisor’s name). Then create an IFTTT task that adds an event to your Google Calendar every time an email is sent to or from your clients. Take a look at your calendar every week or so and find out who you haven’t talked to in some time, and make an effort to reach out.

  • Automate copying all project or client-related attachments to Dropbox

Set up a filter in Gmail, labeling all emails related to clients and/or projects with attachments “Attachment.” Activate this preset “recipe” (or build your own task if you have a custom label). Now IFTTT will take care of saving every attachment with your label into Dropbox.

8. Gmail Labs

gmail-labs
If you haven’t taken a look at Gmail Labs recently, log into Gmail, click your “Settings” gear on the right, click “Settings,” then click on the “Labs” tab and start enabling things!
A lot of Google Labs are extremely handy – here are a few of my favorites:
  • Canned responses: Canned responses lets you save email ‘templates’ in Gmail to make re-using frequently used language simple to do. Great for recurring weekly or monthly emails.
  • Sender Time Zone: If you work with businesses or coworkers in separate time zones, this lab saves you the hassle of calculating time zone differences in your head.
  • Inserting Images: This lab lets you insert images into your message body, or by URLs. Great for sprucing up boring emails with screenshots and images.
  • Video chat enhancements: If you ever use Google’s video chat for communicating with clients or coworkers, this Lab is a must.

9. Screen Capture Chrome Extension

screen-capture
In our line of work, we talk about websites. A lot. Use this screenshot extension for Chrome (by Google) to capture regions of web pages – or entire web pages – for emails and reports. You can even mark them up with circles, arrows, text, etc. without Photoshop or a photo editor.

10. Greplin Chrome Extension

greplin-extension
The Greplin Chrome Extension makes it easy to find that conversation you had, or the link you can’t remember, whether that conversation happened on Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Basecamp, or through Gmail (that’s just the short list).
